Making Healthy Eating Simple: Instacart Makes the Thrive Global Cookbook Instantly Shoppable

At Instacart, we believe healthy eating should be as easy as tapping “Add to Cart.” That’s why we’re excited to share details on our partnership with Thrive Global, leveraging the Instacart Developer Platform (IDP) API to make the Thrive Global Cookbook shoppable with just a few clicks.
Designed with Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan – a nonprofit organization serving more than 530,000 Medi-Cal members in Los Angeles and San Diego – the Thrive Global Cookbook features more than 60 nutritious, budget-friendly recipes curated to help make it easier for families to shop for and cook healthy meals at home. Now, with the IDP integration, every cookbook recipe instantly becomes a shoppable grocery list, making expert-backed nutrition guidance actionable, and healthier meals more accessible than ever. In addition to globally-inspired recipes, the Thrive Global Cookbook includes healthy swaps and simple, stress-reducing tips – called Microsteps – for cooking, meal planning, and more.

One of the core pillars of Instacart Health is using our platform to help consumers make healthy, more informed choices when shopping for groceries – but we know healthy eating starts with accessibility. With our technology, we can bring fresh and nutritious food to more than 98% of U.S. households, including 95% of those located in low-access areas known as food deserts. This reach, combined with expert nutrition guidance and shoppable recipes – like those featured in the Thrive Global Cookbook – help to make healthy cooking and eating both more accessible and approachable. This partnership, along with others like it, is a testament to our continued efforts to offer tools that simplify grocery shopping, meal planning, and cooking – while empowering families to build healthier habits in their everyday lives.
Instacart’s partnership with Thrive Global is part of a broader initiative by Thrive Global and its philanthropic arm, the Thrive Global Foundation, alongside Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan, to make nutritious, budget-friendly meals more accessible in the communities that need them most. By connecting technology, healthcare, consumer products, and nonprofit organizations, this multi-sector collaboration ensures the Thrive Global Cookbook is more than a resource – it serves as a practical and actionable tool for families and individuals to build healthier habits, one meal at a time.
"Food is a big part of our mission at Thrive Global," said Arianna Huffington, founder and CEO of Thrive Global. "It's one of five daily behaviors we focus on — along with sleep, movement, managing stress and connecting with others — to improve our health. Our daily behaviors are all connected. What we eat affects everything else — our sleep, our stress, how much we move, and how we feel.”
"Access to nutrient-rich, budget-friendly meals is necessary for every individual's overall well-being. This cookbook is a tremendous resource to help people incorporate more healthy food into their diet," said Kristen Cerf, president and CEO of Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan.
Powering Partners Through the Instacart Developer Platform
IDP is a publicly available API that uses our industry-leading online grocery platform to make third-party digital experiences shoppable. IDP enables a wide range of partners – from nonprofits and public health organizations to content creators and health systems – to build scalable, shoppable experiences directly into their digital platforms.
Our collaboration with Thrive Global underscores the continued momentum behind IDP, which is becoming a foundational part of our broader health strategy. From cookbooks and meal planning to clinical nutrition recommendations, IDP makes trusted content shoppable so people can get the nutritious food they need from the grocers they know, love and trust. Using IDP to leverage our grocery fulfillment network, we’re helping to ensure more people can take action on expert advice so they can live healthier lives.
As we continue to expand IDP to support healthcare, recipe content and beyond, we’re working toward a future where food, technology, and care are seamlessly connected – and where nutritious choices are within reach for every household.
